Diehl Aerospace, working with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, is developing ‘Power Line Communication’ (PLC) for aircraft. Essentially, PLC transmits data via the existing aircraft power distribution network. The components are integrated into application devices and there fore only one single connector is required for both power and data. PLC has the potential to enable a significant reduction in aircraft wiring, weight, and volume. Weight reduction reduces fuel consumption, and therefore CO2 and NOx emissions. The absence of data networks reduces the complexity of the overall wiring and, as a result, significantly reduces the required routing.
